Are Puppies & Fleas Natural Bed Fellows?

Are Puppies & Fleas "Natural" Bed Fellows? - the answers!

Puppy fleas drive your pet mad and, with more than 2,200 species of fleas recognized worldwide, this is a problem that is common to the global population of pet owners. The cat flea most often infests dogs and causes more than itching. Fleas can cause allergies, anemia and transmit tapeworms. To pick the best solution, you must first understand the problem. The adult flea you find crawling through your puppy’s fur represents only the visible manifestation of the problem. The real problems lie beneath the fur.

Symptoms of Fleas

Puppies with fleas become very itchy. Fleas seem to prefer the rear end of dogs and the shoulders, so the pet may chew the flanks and above the tail region or scratch incessantly around the neck and shoulder regions.

With very young puppies a bath in warm water with a mild washing up liquid can be an effective way of killing the fleas and using a flea comb on these areas is a very effective way of removing the remaining fleas and the excrement of the fleas – dried blood. Live fleas should be dropped into a glass of very hot water, preferably with a drop of washing up liquid in it. This will kill the fleas instantly.

But with allergic pets, a single flea bite can cause all over itching. These pups become sensitive and react to flea saliva. Products that don't just kill but also repel fleas work best for allergic pups.

Flea Life Cycle

Adult fleas don’t hop on and off your pet. They stay there unless involuntarily dislodged, but they represent only five percent of the total flea population. The remaining 95 percent composed of flea eggs, larvae, and pupae lurk in the environment and wait for a suitable host to attach themselves to.

Fleas can lay 20 to 40 eggs per day, and ten female fleas can create almost a quarter of a million different life stages in a month. Newly emerged flea larvae can survive two weeks without a blood meal, and pupae/cocoons can survive six months without feeding.
Flea products may address the egg, larvae and adult stages, but no insecticide can kill the cocoon stage. You must wait until it hatches to kill it. It takes fourteen to twenty-one days for the lifecycle to be complete.

Pet Lifestyle

Fleas hate direct sunlight and prefer outdoor shaded areas with sand, leaves or other debris.

So the lifestyle of your puppy determines their exposure. Indoor couch potato pups won’t need the same protection as more active breeds that roam the campo. However, even pups that remain in the confines of the house and immediate surroundings have enough exposure to warrant flea protection.

Age and health also influence the type of product you should choose. Look at the label to make sure the flea or tick protection says it’s safe for your individual pets. Some are not safe for puppies.

While extremes of cold can kill parasites, and they are largely active only during the warm months, owners are recommend to maintain year-round protection against fleas and ticks.

Flea Treatment, Naturally

The safest and most “natural” flea control technique involves using a flea-comb. Frequent vacuuming of the carpet removes up to 90 percent of flea eggs and 50 percent of larvae. Don’t neglect washing pet beds, blankets, and throw rugs as well as any sofa cushions or other favorite pet resting places.

We have found “smoke bombs” a very effective way of purging the indoor, home, environment of fleas. These “bombs” are ignited in a room with all windows and doors closed and they produce a smoke that kills all fleas and their larvae. You leave the room closed for an hour or so while the smoke penetrates the carpets, soft furnishings etc. where these parasites reside! These “bombs” are available from vets and hardware stores, although the best prices can always be found online.

For outdoor habitats, cut the grass short to allow sunlight to drive away the bugs.

Bathing puppies can get rid of existing fleas but won't necessarily keep them off. This is often the safest treatment for very young pups, but be aware of so-called "natural" flea products as they may still be dangerous for youngsters. Spray products do a better job and have some residual, lasting, effect.

CatanDog’s© Anti-parasite Tags - Repelling Fleas the Safe Way

In the foregoing paragraphs we have concentrated on how to treat puppies with fleas which suggests that fleas are an inevitable problem with all puppies. Some of the reasons given for this are:
  • The bitch cannot be treated with chemical spot-on treatments while pregnant or weaning.
  • Not all natural products are as safe as they are made out to be.
  • Puppies cannot be given chemical flea treatments until they are 6 weeks or even older.

With the CatanDog’s Tag these problems are removed!

  • As there are no toxic elements in the CatanDog’s Tags the bitch is able to wear the tag throughout pregnancy and during the weaning period. As a result the puppy is not born into a flea infested environment – his or her mother’s fur!
  • As soon as the puppy can wear a collar the puppy can be washed and a CatanDog’s Tag can be attached to the collar. The puppy is then protected from the multitude of parasites looking for a good meal!
  • The risk of allergies is removed!
  • The protection will last for 24 months and the anxiety of remembering when the next monthly chemical treatment is due is removed!
